Eva's Jem Cake

1 egg

1/2 cup cocoa

1/2 cup shortening

1 1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup sour milk

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp soda

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup hot water

Put in bowl in order given. Do not mix until last item has been added. Then beat well. Bake in moderate oven 350 degrees for 30-40 min.

Icing : 1 cup sugar,1/4 cup Karo, 1/4 cup water.

Boil until spins thread. Pour over egg whites.

Grandma always made this cake when we would visit, and she would leave about 1/4 of the batter in the bowl for us to eat. It was delicious! She would usually leave the cake plain with no icing.
